Gertrude Minnema (nee Slump) went home peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, August 27, 2012 at the age of ninety-five. For the past eight years, Gertrude was a resident at the Holland Christian Home in North Haledon. Prior to residing at the Home, she lived for several years in Ridgewood, before that in Hawthorne, having moved there from Fair Lawn.
Gertrude was born on January 19, 1917 to William and Jennie Slump and grew up in Fair Lawn, NJ. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband of over fifty years, John T. Minnema (1998), her Down Syndrome, but exceptional and specially loved daughter, Joan Carol (1999), her siblings: Ralph Slump, Clara Faasse and Frances Fredericks.
She is survived by her daughter, Jill Minnema Worth and son-in-law Larry Worth of Irvington, VA, her brother, Edward Slump and his wife, Betty of North Fort Myers, FL, a brother-in-law, Arthur Fredericks of North Haledon, brothers and sisters-in-law, Reverend Herman and Marti Minnema of California and Dr. Theodore (Ted) and Tena Minnema of Michigan, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
After graduating 8th grade, she attended Business school and then worked for a wholesale candy business on Bridge Street in Paterson. Thereafter she was employed for over 11 years at E.G. Sheet Metal works in Paterson. She left this position upon her marriage and continued as a full time homemaker for her children and husband, who ran Minnema Builders, Inc., a general contracting business. Gertrude is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood.
Funeral service Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 11:00 am with visitation from 9:30 to 11:00 am at the Holland Christian Home, 151 Graham Ave., North Haledon. Interment will follow at Fair Lawn Cemetery, Fair Lawn. Friends may also call Wednesday evening from 7:00-9:00 pm at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Ave., Hawthorne, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to Eastern Christian School Association of North Haledon.
