Gould, Ethel (nee Bausewein), 95, of Hawthorne, passed away June 9th, 2018, less than three weeks shy of her 96th birthday. She died peacefully at home, with her family close by.
Ethel was born in Midland Park, and was nearly a lifelong resident of Hawthorne. She was raised on her family’s farm on Goffle Road, which she recalled being an unpaved, dirt road during her childhood. After attending Hawthorne schools, she worked for local businesses, including the Arthur W. Gould Coal and Lumber Company, where she met her husband. Her duties there ranged from bookkeeping to driving coal delivery trucks. When the family business was sold, she became a stay-at-home mother and homemaker.
Having lived through the Great Depression, Ethel was a very frugal and pragmatic person. She enjoyed gardening, needlepoint, traveling, and spending time with her family in and around the water at Greenwood Lake.
Ethel was predeceased by her husband, Arthur W. Gould. She is survived by her son, Arthur (Jerry) Gould and his wife Lana of Boxford, MA; her granddaughters, Rebecca Gould of Newburyport, MA and Sarah Gould of Boxford, MA; her sister, Helen Knapp of Pompton Lakes; her brother, August Bausewein Jr. of Hawthorne; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation will be private. Those wishing to pay respects in person may visit with the family on Tuesday from 7:00-9:00PM at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne. In lieu of flowers, Ethel would have preferred donations to the Hawthorne Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
