Hoskins, David J., age 80 of Hawthorne on Saturday, January 12, 2019.
Born in Paterson, Dave had resided in Hawthorne all of his life. Dave started his career as a machinist at family owned Hoskins Machine and Tool Shop in Garfield and later Hawthorne, he came to own and operate Hoskins’ Hardware on Goffle Road in Ridgewood. Ever affable and willing to help, Dave loved his customers and always made time to talk with them and offer advice. Dave was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s R.C. Church in Hawthorne, and was a valuable and consistent sponsor of the church feast each year. Dave was an exempt Volunteer Firefighter for Hawthorne’s Fire Company #1, and a former member of the Hawthorne Gun Club. Dave had an absolute passion for boating and fishing that he shared with everyone. However, that passion was second to his love of family and friends.
David J. Hoskins was the beloved husband of 59 years of Edwina (nee Gilmore) Hoskins. Loving father of Mary Ellen O’Connor and her husband Peter of Warwick, NY, David M. Hoskins of Montclair, and Matthew E. Hoskins and his husband Mark Miller of Hampton Township. Dear grandfather of Peter D. O’Connor, Devon R. Hoskins, and the late Phoebe Hoskins. Brother of Robert Hoskins of Castalian Springs, TN. Dave is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be departing at 9:00am on Thursday, January 17, 2019 from the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne for a 9:30am funeral mass at St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, Hawthorne. Interment will follow at the Christ the King Cemetery, Franklin Lakes. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or to the Hawthorne P.B.A.
