Dorothy De Boer of Hawthorne passed away on February 9, 2020 at the age of 83.
Born on St. Patrick’s Day in 1936, she was a beloved wife of 61 years, loving mother and cherished grandmother. Dorothy’s life revolved around her children and accomplished grandchildren, of whom she was so proud. An accomplished pianist, she received many awards in piano competitions, was the school chorus accompanist in both high school and college, gave piano lessons to earn money while in college, and was a member of a girls barbershop quartet, the Blendettes, while attending Paterson State Teachers College, now known as William Paterson University. She loved teaching the first grade in the Hawthorne school system and also the primary grades in Midland Park. She spent one summer as Head Teacher of the Head Start program in Mahwah. She was a church organist and Junior Choir director for 30 years.
She is survived by and will be sorely missed by her husband, Arthur, daughters Donna Stewart, Debra Grudzinski, and Denise Griffin, and grandchildren Kevin Grudzinski, Shannon and Zachary Stewart, Brad and Kimberly Griffin. She was predeceased by her parents, May and Alex Cantilina and her sister, Charlotte Nuiver.
Funeral service and interment are private. There are no visiting hours. Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne.
Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Hawthorne Volunteer Ambulance Corps or the Hawthorne Fire Department.
